Overview

Naperville Pediatric Psychology & Development was opening a new office. Their previous telephony solution – a four-handset wireless telephone system with a single line – was no longer sufficient. They needed an affordable voice system but didn’t want to sacrifice the ability to upgrade in the future. In addition to standard telephony requirements, the client also needed a way to create a one-way call from an observation room to an observation area.

Medlin Communications was selected as the integrator due to their ability to achieve the overall project goals in a timely manner. Medlin’s good references and 20 year history sealed the deal.

Customer Requirements

The customer requested the following:

  • Phones for six users
  • Support for audio transmission from an observation room to an observation area
  • Easy administration
  • On-screen view of the status of the system, including which users were on the telephone
  • Installation of solution must be completed within 10 days of contract signing
  • Solution must utilize the existing cabling infrastructure

Proposed Solution

Medlin Communications proposed an Asterisk-based solution using the Xorcom XR1000 stand-alone IP-PBX appliance XR1-19. The Xorcom unit was selected as it included the line resources required by the client, and is a tested and proven platform that is fully compatible with the Asterisk solution. It comes with an embedded Asterisk distribution for GUI administration of the telephone system, as per the customer requirement. The clinicians needed to be able to turn on the monitoring function easily so that others can observe when they are working with the patients. So, we addressed this one-way audio transmission requirement in the observation room by using an Aastra 9480i speakerphone and an Aastra 9731 configured as a paging group.

Results

Implementation was completed in less than 10 days, and is currently meeting the needs of the practice.

In the future, the customer may add telephone sets and remote phone sets, and a fax serving facility. The modular system architecture of the XR1000 supports up to 16 analog lines in a single unit, so this expansion is supported in the framework of the existing equipment.
